Berta’s Bread was born here in Charleston out of a love for baking. There’s nothing more rewarding than creating something that others enjoy. My bread is made using a starter that looks like a science project kept in my fridge. The starter has to be fed every few days to keep it “alive” and capable of producing bread. I baked my first loaf over 20 years ago, and I’ve been hooked ever since. Many starters later, I still enjoy baking every loaf! The different bread flavors are a result of trial and error, but my family doesn’t mind eating the errors.
